Isreal is using the lastest technologies to keep doggie doo-doo off its streets.  We just read an article in Reuters that described a new way to deal with pet droppings-- by using DNA.  The Isreali city of Petah Tikva has launched a program to:

First, get the DNA of the dogs in the city.  Then, take DNA from droppings found on the street or in collection bins.  Finally, when matches are found between dogs and droppings, owners are either rewarded (if the poo was found in a collection bin) or fined (if the poo was found on the street).

We had two reactions here at PetDuel.  First, this is a cool use of technology, especially when rewarding owners for keeping the streets clean.  But then, it seems a bit expensive, and a bit overblown.  Are pet owners in Isreal really that irresponsible when they walk their dogs that the city government should spend time analyzing DNA found in dog droppings to punish owners?

We'd like to hear your thoughts on this, would you like to see a program like this in your city?

Here at PetDuel.com, we have always believed that pets should be spayed and neutered to keep pet populations down.  Recently, we came across an article that suggests yet another reason to spay and neuter your pets-- it will keep them healthier.  Spaying and neutering frees pets from illnesses related to cancer, hernias, transmittable diseases, and the desire to wander away from the safety of home and find a mate.  This is an issue we feel strongly about, and if you have friends that do not spay or neuter their pets, please send this message along.
